A day at Mziki
Another eventful weekend at Mziki /Phinda.
The highlight of our game drives was being able to do a lengthy close up observation of an elephant taking a bath in one of the mud pools.
The other was an encounter of a sumptuous kind. Whilst returning to the lodge from an early morning game drive we came across one of those elaborately staged high-end tourist breakfast-in-the-bush scenes. The perfectly choreographed setting; colourfully laid out tables, camp fires, coffee brewing, smell of bacon and eggs being prepared, champagne….. So perfect I was expecting to see Meryl Streep – like a re-make of Out of Africa.
We should have suspected. It was Steve and Cheryl’s doing. The surprise was perfect. Amazing how quickly tourist-envy can vanish when its your treat.
Back at the lodge and more than sufficiently nourished, we collected some diving gear and headed off to Sodwana Bay. For the non-South Africans, Sodwana is a popular local scuba and snorkelling destination on the north coast of Kwa-Zulu Natal. From Mziki Lodge its only a 45 minutes drive. According to Wiki, Sodwana is one of the furthest southern located coral reefs in the world and despite the fact that its only a fraction the size of the Great Barrier Reef, it is estimated to contain more than two-thirds the amount of fish species.
A Day in the life…….
