An African Weekend
What weekend !
We were guests of Steve and Cheryl at their game lodge called Mziki. Mziki shares open borders with Phinda Private Game Reserve on the North Coast of Natal – approximately 2.5 hours drive from our home in Durban.
Phinda started off as a game reserve by undertaking the biggest game relocation a the time to a 34,600 hectares of degraded farms land with the sole aim of establishing a pristine wildlife reserve. Over time fences between neighbouring farms such as Mziki was dropped and the area has now grown to 56 830 acres of indigenous bush land dedicated too the presevation of wildlife. It has seven distinct habitats and are home to a variety of wildlife including Africa’s Big Five and 415 bird species.
All that said and as many an overseas vistor can attest to, the amount of game you can spot on short visits like these are largely a matter of luck. And this weekend we had plenty of. From the moment we entered to the last day we left. It was like a zoo….!
